Painting Tips: How to Paint Your Plaster

Plaster is a popular choice for interior walls due to its durability, aesthetic appeal, and versatility. After you get your plastering done, you’ll probably want to think about painting it. We always recommend you hire a professional to ensure you get the best results possible, however if you’re on a budget and are looking to do it yourself, here are some steps that might help:

  1. Good preparation is crucial for any successful project. Start by clearing your work area and laying down a drop sheet. Then gather your tools, including a ladder, brush, roller, extension pole, and tray.

  2. Begin by cleaning the ceiling. Use a broom to remove any cobwebs or dust, and wash the area. Although it may not be the most enjoyable task, ensuring your ceiling or walls are clean is an essential step that can prevent problems later down the track.

  3. Next, tape around the cornices, edges, and downlights.

  4. Start by cutting-in around the areas where the roller won’t reach using a brush. This includes painting around the downlights and edges to create a border.

  5. After evenly loading your roller, start in one corner and work fluidly in a parallel motion. For optimal results, paint in 1-meter sections, working across and then down. Roll as far as possible into the previously brushed sections.

  6. Once you’ve finished a large section of the ceiling and while the paint is still damp, begin laying-off the paint. This step is crucial in achieving a smooth and consistent finish. Use an unloaded roller to gently pull towards you in a straight line with no pressure, starting from the top left corner of the ceiling. Be light in your touch to prevent new brush strokes from forming. Overlap your last movement slightly so that your roller rubs away the line created by the previous stroke.

  7. If your ceiling requires two coats, simply wait for the first coat to dry for 2 hours before re-cutting the ceiling at step 4.

By following these painting tips, you can help keep your walls looking beautiful for years to come. If you take proper care when painting your home, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the outcome! It can be time-consuming to paint properly, but it’s definitely worth the effort.

Richie, ROH Building

“We contracted Jamie and his team from Aspect Plastering on a new childcare build in Brassall and really enjoyed the experience. Jamie provided a competitive price, got the job done within programme and the quality of the work was very good. Jamie just did what he said he would do, which can be hard to come by these days.

Nothing is perfect on a building site and Jamie and his team were faced with many challenges throughout the project, but they just made it happen without complaining or blaming other trades. It was a pleasure working with Aspect Plastering and I look forward to doing many more childcare centres in the future with them.”
